Glass definitely provides mobile handsets with exclusive features: a cold, smooth and hard surface feels and looks good, not to mention the high-quality optical performance, hardness and wear resistance that enables the slimmest designs.
Up to now, you may find glass used in mobile handset windows and keypads, usually as flat, two-dimensional sheets. The glass may be tempered or hard coated and it might have some decoration: printing, UV patterns or PVD coating. The next generation will introduce glass in three-dimensional forms, even curved or twisted, with functional coatings to make cleaning easier or to avoid reflections, and with a variety of cool decorations. Touch screens of glass have many benefits – the next step might be a fully transparent screen.
LITEONMOBILE is in on this development and is now preparing to include glass in its offering. Product Manager Peter Jang is confident on being able to answer the future market needs with both capability, expertise and insight.
- According to our studies the strong growth phase for glass usage in mobile handsets will begin in late 2009. We are building up our capabilities during the beginning of next year and targeting customer approvals by fall 2009, says Peter Jang.
LITEONMOBILE's added value in providing glass lies especially in decoration and integration. The company has strong expertise in decorating plastics and metals and other materials, and many of those technologies apply also to glass. Being the overall supplier of other visual mechanics components as well, LITEONMOBILE is also strong on assembly.
- Smart integration is one of our core capabilities. Bringing glass as a new material into this complex is an interesting and challenging addition to the new innovations that we already have to offer.
