Seamless, shiny strength with glass and plastics joined together

Lite-On Mobile introduces technology called Glass Insert Moulding, which enables a seamless A cover and glass combination for mobile phones. Only imagination can limit how you can utilize it for other products.

If you want smooth lines, a glass window, strength and the possibility of touch functions, this may be the answer. The advantages are obvious – the device looks good, does not break easily, and comes at a competitive price. Technically, the process puts together a glass window and plastic cover. "We are ready for manufacturing during the first quarter of 2011," says Peter Jang , Senior Manager of Glass and Windows at LOM Guangzhou.

The glass used can be, for example, 2D Gorilla Glass, which is an environmentally friendly alkali-aluminosilicate thin-sheet glass, with toughness and excellent damage resistance. The recommended thickness of the glass is over 0.8mm (for hardness). For plastics, Lite-On Mobile has found the best composition to be with glass reinforced plastic materials.

Special moulding technology brings shine and gloss

A high glossy surface for the cover can be achieved with special moulding technology, even when using Glass Fiber composite material. This is a new generation of injection moulding process, where the mould is electrically heated and cooled down in short time frame.

In spite of the additional process of the mould heating and cooling, the total cycle time of injection moulding is reduced when the mould innovation is conducted adequately.

For decoration, for example glass and cover parts' colour blending, logo or back side printing can be utilized.
