Cost-efficient Differentiation with LOM PVD solutions

LITEONMOBILE has a full range of PVD technology available: 2-tone PVD, gradient PVD texture and the possibility to create customer-specific PVD colors. All of the techniques are available for mass production in Q3 2010 at LOM’s manufacturing site in Guangzhou, China.

The advantage of using metal PVD is the possibility to have a hard coating and colors on stainless steel and still retain the metallic feeling. The hard coating on top of the metal is also resistant to scratches.

All metal PVD coatings are manufactured by using a physical vapor deposition technology – sputter deposition to coat a metal substrate with a hard substance such as transition metal carbides, nitrides or borides. The coating materials are very hard and exhibit various colors by changing the composition.

Customer-specific PVD colors are adjusted exactly to the colors desired by the customer.  PVD technology limits the availability of colors, but the range is still wide.

– With 2-tone PVD, two colors can be added to the same visual cover.  This can be used, for instance, to print a logo in a different color from that of the main surface of the cover, says Jukka Hyvärinen, Innovations Manager, BCU Metals.

– A smooth transition from one color to another can be made with gradient PVD. This means in practice that PVD is done twice and in between the two PVD coatings special gradient masking  is made to get the desired look, continues Jukka Hyvärinen.
